Located on the N10 road, in the small town of Vila Fresca de Azeitão some 19kms west of Setubal, is the delightful Quinta da Bacalhôa, also referred to as the Bacalhôa Palace. It is regarded as one of the finest early examples of domestic Renaissance architecture in Portugal. Work on the building commenced in 1528, after purchase by Braz de Albuquerque, son of the famous Portuguese mariner, Afonso de Albuquerque, and was completed in 1554. Built in the Italian Renaissance style, the villa is most famous for its wonderful azulejo tiling and extensive parterre gardens.
