The gardens and grounds of the Queluz palace are alone worthy of a visit. The most famous sections are the Malta garden, where guests would spill over from concerts, and the Hanging or Pensile garden which is laid over arches to give its raised level. These formal gardens were the work of French architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon and the Dutch Gardener Joseph van der Kolk. Neptune’s Fountain, with its surrounding statuary, is a focal point of interest. The extensive grounds contain a profusion of statues, ponds, a beautiful grotto and the azulejo tiled canal where the royal family would go boating.
