Situated 12 kms from Lisbon, this palace, built between 1747 and 1794, is regarded as an outstanding example of 18th century architecture. Originally a hunting lodge, Pedro the son of João V converted it into a summer palace designed by Mateus Vicente de Oliveira. The central block, chapel and music room were completed by 1758. In 1760 Pedro married his cousin, the future Queen Maria I, and the palace was extended to the design of French architect Jean-Baptiste Robillon. The west wing, lion staircase and the gardens were added and the music, ambassadors’and throne rooms were decorated.
