Queen Leonor, wife of King João II, founded the free hospital in the 15th century after seeing peasants wallowing in mud as a cure for rheumatism and arthritis. The spa became very popular and was used by the majority of Portuguese kings. The water is sulphurous, calcic, chlorinated, sodic and magnesian with a pH level of 6.7. It is recommended for the treatment of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases, diseases of the respiratory system and skin diseases. The spa is open all the year round, has accommodation and facilities for the disabled. The town name translates as The Queen’s Spa.
