Just 3 km north of Vila do Conde is the lively summer resort of Póvoa de Varzim, which has an excellent support infrastructure including a casino. The long stretch of Póvoa de Varzim beach has many individual beaches named after the cafes and restaurants that serve them, with names such as Hotel and Carvalhido. The tendency for the seas to be rough attracts surfers and body boarders. The average summer seawater temperature is 16 ºC, parking is available, there are lifeguards in season and facilities for the disabled. Umbrellas can be hired and there are plenty of bars and restaurants.
