The Príncipe Real Garden is a particularly pleasant park and is also known as the França Borges Garden, in tribute to the journalist whose statue is located inside. Laid out in 1860 in an affluent area, it has a centuries-old cedar tree where the locals play card games and some fine robinia, magnolia and Judas trees. There is also a statue of the leading poet Antero de Quental (1842-1891) by the sculptor Lagoa Henriques, erected to commemorate the centenary of his death by suicide. The Patriarchal Reservoir is located beneath the garden and there is a children’s playground and café.
