The medieval, or primitive, wall of Porto dates from the 11th/12th centuries and was built on earlier defensive positions around Cathedral Hill. The wall had four entrances, Vandoma Arch (the main gate) demolished in 1855, Verdades Arch(also known as the Postigo da Mentira), Sant’Ana das Aldas Arch, and the São Sebastião Arch. Apart from a portion near Vandoma, only a few sections of the wall, hidden under houses, remain. The wall was eventually replaced in the 14th century by the Ferdinand Wall (see separate entry).
