The lovely Prainha Beach is located approximately 30 km north east of Funchal beyond Caniçal and near the beautiful Ponta de São Lourenço. The sandy beach is, as its name translates, tiny and is very popular with locals particularly at weekends. Access is difficult and there are no lifeguards, but facilities include a café and bar, changing rooms, toilets and showers and sun beds and umbrellas can be hired. Above all, it has real sand in contrast with the normal Madeiran pebble beaches.
