The island of Santa Maria has beautiful sandy beaches, nestling amidst the cliffs of its small coves. The most famous of these is Praia Formosa in the village of São Formosa, with fine light sand stretching from Prainha to Ponta de Malbusca. Most other beaches are formed from black sand, resulting from the erosion of the archipelago’s basalt lava. The sea has a mild, warm temperature and visitors are pleasantly surprised by its pure, clear water. São Formosa is where the Maré de Agosto Festival takes place, the largest festival on the island.
