Praia do Norte boasts a large beach with black sand and is one of the most beautiful on the island. It is located at the foot of stunning sheer cliffs and the area forms part of the Capelo volcanic complex. Praia do Norte has interesting geographic features including Baía de Ribeira das Cabras and Fajã da Praia. The volcanic crater is situated to the southeast of the island. After the 1672 eruption the inhabitants planted vineyards and fruit trees and transformed Praia do Norte into an agricultural parish. The population in the 17th century had 712 inhabitants, higher than today.
