The road to Praia do Loulé Velho cuts through a broad rural valley, where you can see some of the ancient hydraulic irrigation devices such as aqueducts and norias. Here, when the wind whips up the sand, it uncovers some Roman fish-salting tanks and the remains of an ancient estuary-lagoon system, a reminder of a period when the sea was further away. Also hidden somewhere in this area are the ruins of a Carthaginian fishing village. There is parking near the beach, which has restaurants and toilets at its western end and is supervised during the bathing season.
