At Praia do Garrão the cliffs give way to a vast sand dune system in a freshwater wetland area, a rare feature along this coastline, and very popular amongst water birds. A network of wooden footpaths crosses over the dunes and visitors are asked to keep to them to protect the dunes, which are rich with aromatic flora. The lagoons are unsuitable for bathing. There is a large, organised parking area near the beach, which has basic support restaurants and toilets and is supervised during the bathing season.
