Situated on the western end of the Ilha da Culatra, Praia do Farol owes its name to the enormous lighthouse at Barra Nova close to Cabo de Santa Maria. The beach is vast; to the east it is more peaceful and deserted. The large mole to the west of the island is used by diving schools, underwater fishers and anglers. Surfing is also possible here. Access is by boat from Faro (in the summer) and Olhão (all year round). There are plenty of facilities and it is supervised during the bathing season, but there is no supervision at Barra Nova.
