Paved with a dramatic mosaic design radiating out from the obelisk erected in 1776, Vila Real de Santo António’s main square is surrounded by orange trees and elegant 18th century town houses. This square contains three of the town’s most important 18th century buildings: the church, the town hall and the former guardhouse, and is populated with shops, cafes and restaurants. Just behind the square is the Centro Cultural António Aleixo, which used to be the old market. Lining the riverbank, a long esplanade on the Avenida da República offers an impressive view of Ayamonte in neighbouring Spain.
