The Praça Marquês de Pombal, at the top of the Avenida de Liberdade is also known as the Rotunda and is dominated by the 1934 monument to Pombal. Responsible for the reconstruction of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake, he virtually ruled Portugal from 1750-1777. Appropriately, he is depicted with his hand on a lion, the symbol of power. The earthquake is symbolically represented at the base by broken stone blocks and tidal waves. On the northwest of the Rotunda is the entrance to the Edward VII Park. The paving stones are decorated with Lisbon’s coat of arms in mosaics.
