The Praça dos Restauradores is dedicated to the restoration of independence in 1640, after 60 years of Spanish rule, and is located near Rossio, which is the nearest Metro station. The imposing central obelisk, erected in 1886 (see separate entry), commemorates the liberation. The square is surrounded by interesting buildings including the Palácio Foz on the west side, now a tourist office (see separate entry), the former Eden Cinema with its Art Deco façade, now a hotel, and on the southwest corner another hotel designed by Jose Luis Monteiro, who was responsible for the adjacent Rossio Station.
