The beautiful Praça do Commercio, known as the Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square), was for 400 years a royal palace. After the 1755 earthquake the square was the focus of the Marquês de Pombal’s design for the new Lisbon; the new palace buildings became government offices after the revolution in 1910. The open south side is a fine gateway to Lisbon from the River Tagus. Dominating the square is the 1775 statue of King Josê I. Lisbon’s Welcome Centre is in the northwest corner and in the opposite corner, past the Triumphal Arch, the city’s oldest café, the Martinho da Arcada.
