Two monuments in the Teófilo Braga garden in the Praça da República merit attention. The first, a 1916 work by Teixeira Lopes (senior), is a pagan allegory of Bacchus the Roman god of wine and son of Jupiter and Semele. In complete contrast, the other is a bronze memorial to ‘Father Américo’ (Américo Monteiro de Aguiar), who devoted his life to the needy. It is a 1962 work by Henrique Moreira and depicts ‘Father Américo’ flanked by two "gaiatos" (little boys); it was commissioned by his admirers.
