Praça da Figueira (Fig Tree Square) was once the site of the main Hospital de Todos-os- Santos (All Saints). Severely damaged in the earthquake of 1755, reconstruction commenced and then stopped, with the hospital subsequently demolished in 1775. Under the Marquês de Pombal’s design, the square became the city’s market place; a covered market, built in 1885, existed until the 1950s. Now occupied by shops, cafes and hotels, the main items of interest are the statue of king João I by Leopoldo de Almeida, erected in 1971, and the multitude of pigeons, reminiscent of Trafalgar Square. Rossio is the nearest metro station.
