Originally part of a convent, Pópulo Church was built on the instructions of Archbishop Agostinho de Jesus in the 16th century. The Mannerist style was substantially changed in the 18th century, when the façade was redesigned in neo-classical style by the celebrated local architect Carlos Amarante (1742-1815). The church is dedicated to the Virgin of Santa Maria del Populo in Rome. The blue and white 18th century tiling, attributed to Policarpo de Oliveira Bernardes, is outstanding. The other buildings, after the banning of religious orders in 1834, were used by the military and are now offices of the Braga City Council.
