The Portuguese Centre of Photography is housed in the former Court of Appeals Gaol building, which has been specially adapted for the purpose; a project co-ordinated by the architects Eduardo Souto de Moura and Humberto Vieira. Apart from both temporary and permanent exhibitions, the Centre, which is part of the Ministry of Culture, has the responsibility for encouraging and developing Portuguese photography. An interesting feature is the display of work of the Scotsman Frederick William Flower (1815-1889), who spent a large portion of his life in Porto and is considered a pioneer of Portuguese photography.
