The Portugal Pavilion in the Parque das Nações was designed by the leading Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira for Expo 98. The enormous ‘sagging’ concrete canopy, over the public square between its two component buildings, immediately catches the eye. The canopy is 65 by 50 metres and consists of a thin concrete slab reinforced with stainless steel rods, it weighs 1,400 metric tons. The consulting engineer for the project was Segadães Tavares. The interior of the building, on which Siza Vieira collaborated with another leading Portuguese architect Eduardo de Souto Moura, is currently empty and closed to the public.
