One of the most famous of the port lodges of Vila Nova de Guia is that of Porto Sandeman. The original company was founded in 1790 and is housed in a 16th century former convent across the River Douro from Porto. Apart from its conducted tours, when you can learn about the making and maturation of port, there is a museum where you can follow the history of the port wine industry and the company. A tour of at least one port lodge (there are more than 50) is a must for all Porto visitors.
