Porto Pim was, until 1878, Horta’s main harbour. It has a beautiful sheltered sand beach bordered by turquoise waters and is the main bathing venue of the town. Only Portão Fortificado de Porto Pim and the walls of the small Forte de São Sebastião and walls remain from the 17th century fortifications which once protected the harbour. Also in this bay are the remains of an old whaling factory, which has been converted into a whaling museum documenting the work of the whalers.
