The remote village of Porto Moniz is located on the northwest tip of Madeira, about 46 km from Funchal. It has a most attractive series of natural rock bathing pools, which are filled by the tide with crystal clear water. There is a recently constructed promenade which has green areas, cafes, viewpoints and a Living Science Centre (Centro de Ciência Viva). There are facilities for the disabled, lifeguards, a kindergarten, changing rooms, a car park and a first aid centre. Set on a hill with great views including the picturesque Ilhéu Mole (Mole Island), it is well worth the journey.
