Porto Martins is a small, quiet beach settled among rocks formed by ancient lava flows. As with many of the coastal areas on Terceira, this has interesting aspects due to the way the lava has set. This is a popular spot for surfers as it is a sheltered point break that has reliable surf. Although attractive all year round, autumn and winter are the best seasons for waves. Ideal winds are from the west. The best swell direction is from the north and it has both left and right reef breaks. The beach is rarely crowded.
