Originally a Moorish fort, the unusual and fanciful Porto de Mós Castle is an irregular pentagon in shape with a tower at each corner. It was captured from the Moors in 1158 by King Afonso Henriques and over the years converted into a magnificent fortified palace, notably in the 15th century by King Afonso V. One tower collapsed in 1735, and the great earthquake of 1755 and subsequent quakes severely damaged the castle. Of the towers, only three, badly ruined, remained. The castle, perched on a hill above the town, has now been partially restored and its green turrets are a unique feature.
