The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Porto d’Ave is located about 6.5 km southeast of Póvoa de Lanhoso. It dates from the 18th century and was built with donations sent from Brazil by local emigrants. The followers of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres (Our Lady of the Miracles) form the nucleus of this church which is covered with azulejos depicting scenes from the childhood of Jesus. The influence of the Braga’s Bom Jesus Sanctuary is apparent in the stairway and chapels and, although it is no longer a major pilgrimage site, the setting is most attractive.
