Built between the 12th and 13th centuries under the patronage of Bishop Hugo, the twin-towered cathedral is one Portugal’s most important Romanesque monuments and one of Porto’s oldest. Extensively altered in the 17th and 18th centuries in the Baroque style, the external façade and interior retain their Romanesque character. There are several richly decorated altars including the silver Altar to the Sacrament, which is to the left of the main altar, itself beautifully carved and gilded. The cloisters, ambulatory and chapterhouse are also worthy of particular note
