The Porta da Sol Gardens were laid out at the end of the 19th century on the high grounds of the old Moorish castle; they are enclosed by the medieval walls of the city. This was one of the eight gates into the city at the time of the Reconquest in the 12th century and portions of the towers are also preserved. There are magnificent views over the plains of the Ribatejo province and the towns of Almeirim and Alpiarça can also be seen. The bridge spanning the Tagus River is the 19th century Ponte Dom Luís, which is 1,200 metres long.
