Portalegre is located close to the border with Spain and was of strategic importance throughout the Middle Ages. King Afonso III (1248-79) granted the settlement its first royal charter. Also in medieval times, the Franciscan order established the Convents of São Francisco and Santa Clara. King João III ordered the building of the Cathedral and gave Portalegre city status. The 17th and 18th centuries saw the construction of the Amarelo (Yellow), Falcões (Falcons) and Achioli palaces. These palaces preserve the coats of arms of the families who built them, a unique regional feature.
