The Porta Nova tower is the only one remaining of the three towers from the old walled fortress and lies between the Largo da Porta Nova and Dr. José Novais Square. Originally built in the 15th century, a Renaissance top with gargoyles and a decorative battlement were added in the 16th century when, with its 2.5 metre thick walls, it became a prison. It was used as such until well into the 20th century. It now houses the local Tourist Information Centre and the Handicrafts Centre.
