The present Porta Nova arch dates from 1772/1773 and replaced an earlier gothic gate. It was designed by André Soares and combines Baroque and Neoclassical styles, all in accordance with the wishes of Archbishop José de Bragança. The first gate was in the defensive wall built on the instruction of King Dinis in the 14th century, which was strengthened in 1373 by King Fernando and reinforced again in 1512 by Bishop Diogo de Sousa. Note the feminine figure on top, symbolising the city of Braga.
