The Porta Vila, completed about 1380, is the southern entrance to Óbidos and leads directly on to the tourist shopping street, the Rua Direita. It shelters an oratory chapel, dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, lined with 18th century blue and white tiles related to the Passion of Christ. There is a plaque, commissioned by King Joăo IV dated 1640 and inscribed ‘The Virgin, our Lady was conceived without original sin’, in thanksgiving for the acclamation ending dual monarchy, which gave rise to the Restoration War (1640-1668).
