When visiting the island of Faial, a trip to Horta Marina and Port is essential. This is a beautiful and lively place, enriched by the great open-air exhibition of paintings made by the seafarers who stop off. Several years ago, a crew member of a sailing ship anchored at Horta decided that he should leave a souvenir of his stay there on the dock wall. The first painting was followed by others until now they cover the whole length of the wall. According to superstition, boats which failed to leave a record of their presence have suffered accidents.
