Opened in 1948, in a building left over from the 1940 Lisbon World Fair between the Discoveries Monument and Belém tower, the museum houses Portuguese traditional handicrafts and paintings from all over Portugal. It is organised by region, including Madeira and the Azores. Typical examples of regional specialities are fishing equipment from the Algarve, and basket ware from Tras-os-Montes, but the wide range includes furniture, ceramics, wickerwork, agricultural tools, jewellery, musical instruments, pottery, costumes, saddles and of course the traditional Barcelos Cock.
