One of Chaves’ most important monuments is the Roman Bridge over the River Tâmega, which connects the two most important parishes in the town. The 16 arch bridge (12 arches are visible) was built around 100 BC at the time of Emperor Trajan and is 140 metres long. It made Chaves an important staging post on the route from Braga to Astorga in Spain. Roman milestones can be seen on the bridge, although these are copies (the originals being housed in the municipal museum), and record that the funds for construction were raised locally.
