Ponte de Sor’s name is derived from the original Roman bridge, which was part of the 3rd military road connecting Lisbon to Merida. Ponte de Sor once belonged to the Knights Templar, but was later taken over by the Order of St. Benedict. This region was an area of upheaval during the Reconquest. The town received its first Charter in 1161, when it was bestowed by the Diocese of Évora, and later ratified by D. Manuel. Unfortunately the Roman bridge in no longer in evidence. King João VI had the replacement bridge that stands today built in 1822.
