The town’s name derives from the fact that, before the attractive 15th century bridge across the River Lima was built, the river was crossed by ferry. The peaceful town has a number of interesting monuments including the pillory, the town hall, graceful 16th and 17th century manor houses and the parish church of São João Baptista, designed by Vilalobos. Ponte da Barca is the birthplace of 16th century poets Diogo and Agostinho Bernardes and the poets’ garden (Jardim dos Poetos) and riverside gardens are ideal for picnics. On Tuesdays there is an open air market along the river banks.
