Strongly contrasting with the rest of the island, Faial’s westernmost point is marked by the Ponta dos Capelinhos, one of the main tourist points of the island. This barren rock desert is a reminder of the most recent volcanic activities on the archipelago. For an entire year, from 1957 to 1958, the off-shore volcano Capelinhos ejected more than 30 million tons of ash and lava 1,000 m high into the sky. As a result more than 2,000 inhabitants lost their homes and land. The story is told at the Museu dos Capelinhos in the nearby village of Capelo.
