The beautiful Ponta de São Lourenço Nature Reserve peninsula is approximately 30 km northeast of Funchal and the most easterly point of Madeira. About 9 km long and 2 km wide it includes the islands of Cevada and Ponta de São Lourenço. In order to protect its fauna, flora and geological heritage, it was declared a nature reserve in 1982 and has important groups of endemic plants. It is also home to many bird species and it is said that occasionally sea lions can be seen. It can be accessed from the sea, but only with safety on the south side.
