The Ponta da Queimada is a high headland marking the western end of the island. It features a lighthouse, located on a steep cliff at the end of a track through a bizarre volcanic landscape, resulting from the eruption of the Pico de Santa Barbara in 1761. There is also a natural swimming pool and both sides of the cape are strewn with beautiful coves, protected by more than 100 m high cliffs, and small caves, washed out by the sea. An old whale lookout, the Miradouro da Farol da Serreta, is a popular viewpoint, providing fabulous views over the coast.
