The town is closely linked to the Marquês de Pombal who died here in 1782 after retiring in disgrace in 1777; his tomb remained in the St. Anthony’s Convent until 1856, when it was transferred to Lisbon. The convent now houses the town hall and has a museum with a collection of art and documents related to the Marquis. Other interesting sites are the 1703 Lady of Cardal Church, the 15th century Old Clock Tower, the 1551 Our Lady of Piety Chapel and the 17th century Condes de Castelo Melhor manor house. The Louriçal Convent is nearby, as is the Panorâmico Aquaparque.
