The village of Podentes is located about 7 km north of Penela and its interesting Manueline style pillory, used for punishment and public humiliation, is a listed monument. Thought to date from the granting of a charter to Podentes by King Manuel I in 1514, its marble one-piece column is claimed to be the largest in Portugal and is believed to have come from the ruins of a Roman building. The pillory is mounted on a four step base and is capped by a cube with the Cross of Christ; there are armillary spheres on two sides and shields on the others.
