The Chafariz dos Canos on the Rua Candido dos Reis, close to St Peter’s Church, is a distinctive landmark of Torres Vedras. An ornate public drinking water fountain, the first reference to it is in 1331. It was reconstructed in 1561 for Princess Maria, daughter of King Manuel I, and restored again in 1831. It is in the form of a pavilion with ogival arches, a vaulted roof and a trough with two Baroque style pipes inside.
