Pinhel, situated approximately 36 km northeast of Guarda, was one of the most advanced strongholds in this region. The walls, six gates and two towers were built by King Dinis in 1385 and it was part of a defensive system that included the castles of Trancoso, Marialva and Castelo Mendo. In one tower there is a fine Manueline window and an armillary sphere, a symbol of King Manuel I. In 1810, during the Peninsular War, the town and castle were occupied by the French General Loisson. In the area you can also visit the 15th century Távora family manor house.
