Trancoso’s pillory is located in the historic centre of the town. It was used for punishment by public humiliation and sometimes physical abuse and was regarded as the ultimate symbol of local power. Trancoso was granted its first royal charter between 1173 and 1185 and this was twice confirmed, by King Afonso II in 1217 and King João I in 1391. However the right of a pillory was only granted in 1510 by King Manuel I. Trancoso’s pillory displays Manueline elements in its lantern, in the form of the armillary sphere and the iron Cross of the Order of Christ.
