The pelourinho, or penitential pillory, of Santiago do Cacém is found in the Conde de Bracial Square. The square itself offers an interesting glimpse into the past of the town, with many of the houses facing onto it being emblazoned with crests of bygone days. The pillory is dated 1845, so is later than many in Portugal, but is still a very interesting example of pubic punishment. Wrongdoers were attached to the pelourinho and pelted with rotten fruit and vegetables or, if the offence was more serious, received several lashes from a whip wielded by a town official.
