Opposite the entrance to the Convento Nossa Senhora da Conceiçao an alley leads through the old town to the Praça da República, the site of a Manueline pelourinho (pillory column). The Pillory, a medieval punishment instrument, was moved to its current location early in the 19th century. During the move it lost some of its architectural elements, but it was reconstructed in 1938 with authentic replacements. The pillory is sited on top of three octagonal steps. The shaft is decorated and topped with a sphere carrying a Cross of Christ. The pillory was classified in 1933.
