The Figueira da Foz pelourinho (pillory) dates from 1782 and is a symbol of municipal authority, particularly in the dispensation of justice. Pillories were always erected in a prominent place and were traditionally a place of punishment and public humiliation, although there is no record of it being used for this purpose in Figueira da Foz. Classified as a National monument since 1910, this pelourinho is Baroque in style; it has a graceful twisted column on a pedestal, with a capital carved with national emblems.
